What is a dental crown?

A bridge is a false tooth used to replace a missing tooth, offering an alternative to a dental implant or a denture. Bridges are made in much the same way as crowns, either in porcelain with metal inside or entirely in reinforced porcelain. The false tooth is held in place by the tooth next to the gap, or by the teeth on both sides of it.

The Maryland bridge option

If the teeth either side of the gap are healthy with small or no fillings, reshaping them for a conventional bridge is a bigger compromise. In that situation, a "Maryland bridge" may be an option. This minimal-preparation design involves creating a fine ledge on the back of the adjacent tooth and bonding the porcelain bridge to the back of it to hold the false tooth in place, preserving more of the natural tooth. Whether it is suitable depends on the position of the gap and your bite, which our Bulleen dentist can assess during your examination.

Does getting a crown or bridge hurt?

The preparation involved is normally carried out under local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself is generally comfortable. Some mild sensitivity afterwards, particularly to hot or cold, is not unusual and usually settles.
